Kuala Lumpur is one place that you would be able to travel cheap, given that you are familiar with places that provide cheap accommodations. Food can be quite pricey especially when you eat in malls and western delicacies. On the plus point there are many tourist destinations around and the public transportation makes it these places accessible.

Penang offers unique delicacies and sights as well and with the help of Airbnb, getting reasonable accommodations should not be a problem.

Malacca is another place where most of the within walking distance from each other. Accommodations are relatively cheap with even budget hotels being presentable and conveniently located near tourist attractions.

You can arrive at these destination with the use of Catchthatbus.com which allows you to book a bus online rather than travelling to a bus terminal for a mere bus ticket. It is also relatively cheaper than travelling by planes as well. They also have an app which allow you to save on bus travels through their Refer and Earn feature, although it is only available for the Android app.
