Traveling from Singapore to Malaysia and vice versa without prior booking is possible. You can just go ahead and buy your bus or train ticket at the respective ticket counter at the station/terminal you want to depart from. Though, it'd be easier to book your ticket online from websites like www.easybook.com/ (train), and www.catchthatbus.com and redbus.com (bus).
